My media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

By looking at similar magazine products I was able to look at different magazines that have been already made and take some of their ideas and develop them into designs of my own. I found with most of my examples of other magazines that the colors used are normally blacks whites and one or two main colour’s that are bright and quite ‘out there’. As you can see that on my magazine I choose to use a bright green colour for my magazine because I think that the green shows up really well against all back ground colours on the magazine. Green is also a colour that can be associated with a wacky effect and I feel that magazines such as NME do have a slight wacky and rocky feel to them. In NME the title is in a recognizable, and I tried to make a title that people would identify to being my magazine, similarly to NME. NME title is mostly all one colour and I wanted mine to be just one colour also, although NME has a white rim outside the sides of it, I developed mine to have shades of white going through the title rather than on the outside. NME had strap lines also and I tried to encorporate the strap line meanings of NME to be simular to my magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Continued...

My contents page had to busy as the NME pages are very busy, however I developed this to my own style by adding some conventions of the NME contenst page and idea of my own to come up with a NME music magazine style contents page.
I wanted to encorporate the colours that stand out the most as I wrote in my evaluation earlier, as that is what they have done in the contents page in NME. The NME contents page includes alot of music buisness such as new bands and songs out and I encorporated that into my magazine also. Although my contents page is not as busy as the expample NME version, i still encorporated some of the main traits from the NME version into my design and i was happy with the out come.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Double page spread.

In my double page spread I used one particular block colour just as in the double page spread from NME, I developed thier idea of just using a white back groud to change into a grey one. another thing i went along with however developed it is the text. NME used text that is included in the text, I did the same. How ever the style in which it is put on there is simular but not exactly the same. I liked the idea of the white and black on top of eachother so i developed that into my own style by tilting them to the side.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Before I started the product I had used photo shop but not nearly to the extent that i had to learn in order to create my music magazine. I have learned alot about photography through taking the pictres and getting the lighting exactly right in order for it to look proffesional. During the construction of my magazine I took alot of differant pictures to check what would work on my front cover, contents and double page spread.

I learned to use photo shop and all its tools to cut out and tweek my pictures to the way I wanted them. I was also able re-arrange my magazine to make it more to the conventions of music magazine.
Through out the process of making my magazine I have learned on a bigger scale how magazines are made and distributed through out the industry.
I have used the internet to research different magazines already out there and differant magazine companies. By using the companies already on the net, I was able to use the internet to learn more about distributers and how they work. I was able to get hold of NME magazines to get a better idea of the conventions that I can encorporate into my magazine.

Looking back at my preliminary I have learned.

I have learned now much more complex it is to make a real music magazine, I have learned how to make a good picture that would be good enough to be used in a magazine and I learned how to take the pictures and how to set up the set. I have learned more about photoshop and how to use all the fonts and tools. In my preliminary I didn't have much knowledge into fonts or how to put them into photo shop, but since I started and began to develop my skills with my major project, I was able to learn how to find fonts on the internet and put them onto my project to create a better magazine effect. My photo shop skills evolved through out the process of my magazine creation.

How did I attract/address my audience.

By looking at the conventions in other magazines similar to my own I was able adapt conventions from their magazines and develop them into my own. By looking at magazines such as NME and KERRANG, I know for a fact that they are able to work, so I know that if I develop some of their conventions in to my own it was more likely to make my magazine more successful. I already knew the sort of things that my magazine should include to interest music lovers for my type of magazine, so should make sure that those type of things that need to be included are put on the front for strap lines in order to grab the readers attention. The model that I used should be in with the type of music that the magazine represents. I also conducted a questionairre to help me decide what type of things I should do with my magzine down to colours and layout.

Who would the audience be for my media product?

By doing some research into magazines that are around today I was able to conduct some research into asking people what sort of magazines they prefer, to get a better idea to the audience my magazine will be aimed at. After I conducted the research I decided that my magazine would be for 15-25.
Example reader for my magazine would be Ben Fox. He is 18 years old and lives in the centre of Bristol. He enjoys playing his guitar and groing to gigs, he also follow bands. he dresses we but he is still quite grunged down, he wears a small chain around his next and he wears jeans, trainers and a top that has a band on it front of it. he has apart time job in a shop and he uses the money to go to fesivals and gigs. He enjoys reading magazines such as Kerrang and NME, as he likes the band news and the gig information. He would listen to the arctic monkeys and muse along with heavy metal bands. He enjoys watching films such as pulp fiction and likes to go to the cinema to watch action films.
I think my magazine would appeal to Ben as he is a stero typical person who would read SMASH BOX. It may appeal to him because he enjoys simular magazines that i have modeled mine about such as NME.

MEDIA INSTITUTION.

My magazine would be sold my a mainstream company such as the WWMD which stands for the world wide magazine distribution who in a year have distributed 9.000,000 magazines. I would like something like that to distribute my magazine because I would like my magazine to be sold in mass batches. My magazine would need to be mass produced because of the conventions of the magazine are popular in this 21st century. If you compare my magazine with Kerrang or NME, they are produced on a mass scale and do very well in many news agents and book shops. As the conventions of my magazine are similar to the current magazines that are doing well, I think mass production is the way that my magazine should distributed.

How does your media product represent particular groups?

My magazine does have a representation of a particular social group, and that would be of ‘rock and music’ loving teenagers to young adult. My magazine shows gigs and up coming tours which show that people who would be buying the magazine are very much into gigs and that social groups of music lovers are verging on obsessed with them, as that is the key aspect of the magazine. It represents my magazine readder to be following with the latest gigs and festivals. Some might say that they are quite cheeky much like my feature in my double page spread.

Introduction Evaluation points

For my media production I developed a magazine cover, contents page and double page spread using conventions of music magazines. My magazine develops original ideas used and conveyed by music magazines. My magazine was aimed at music loving teenagers and people of higher ages up until about 25. my product looked at a social group of 15-25 and I tried to convey in my magazine things that will interest them to buy the magazine. I used a picture of a model who was aimed to look as if he was a rock star, and conveyed him in a way that people will be interested to read about him. The model I used was used to fit into the age group of the target audience, he is meant to look about 19 and so people buying the magazine can relate to him. The people buying the product should be interested in the strap lines and what the magazine is about inside. I looked at a number of NME magazines to decide on my strap lines and decided to go with strap lines to do with music and to do with the type of music that the music ties in with.

photo shots

This is a total of all the photos that were taken in the photo shoot for the front cover. Not all of them I will be able to use because the shot is wrong, due to lighting and the back ground being wrong.

so far..

At around half way through my project I have so far completed my front cover and I am half way through creating my contents page, so far i have adapted to the tools on photo shop and i think my magazine is coming together.

Contents & Analysis

My contents page will resemble this, in the contents page it shows alot of writing and included and on one it includes a playlist. They both include a long contents about what the magazine has in in. They both include a picture and in particular the scond one includes alot of bright colour which i have tryed to incorporate into the magazine.

In this contents the page it has split up its news articles and a index of bands and playlists, its set out like this so it is alot easier for the reader to identify the colums. I will include this type of genre in my own magazine, however I dont think i will be able to add so many colums due to space.

Two page spread.

My two page spread is going to be a factual piece from the model of my magazine.
It will include a section called 'UNDER THE SKIN' there fore resembling the model and the facts about his life at that moment time, It will give the readers a chance to feel up close and personal with the artist. The page will include one picture of the artist, similar to the front page.
The type of questions that I will ask is to do with the artist life away from the music. The questions will be set out in the same way as this magazine, in paragraphs.

Target Audience & Music

My magazine has a target audience for girls in the age group of 13-18. I will aim to do this by using more mature colours such as reds and blacks than the younger girl magazine such as pinks. The magzine will be a rocky type older magazine that involves a older rocky artist. as the music magazine is aimed more at girls i will envolve a male model to pose as a 'rock' star. this will act as a 'heartthob' for girls reading the magazine, such as zac efron poses in the younger girl magazine. i bleive by using a model in the way it will cause girls to pick up the magazine as a result of 'facying the model'. Boys would be a secondary audience for the magzine as they would be interested in the music aspect of the magazine.

Preperation.

To prepare for my magazine and double page spread i must plan the sort of things I will put into it. This is a example of the type of magazine double page spread that I will design. My double page spread will consist of a white back ground and on main image of the model who the spread will be talking about.
The feature’s head line is in the same style and font as the main coverline on the front cover, it’s also a pull quote from the text. This shows that it’s related. Lily Allen’s name is also in this style which makes it stand out from the surrounding text. The background is clean and white therefore the readers attention is just on the text and the picture.
The text is slightly rocky and ties into the picture die to what she is wearing which is tartan and quite rocky in itself. the picture takes up most of the page drawing the readers attention, it is a mod shot but it shows of her attitude well.

preliminary task

For our preliminary task we had to design a magazine for school and it had to include a midshot and headings.

My preliminary covered all the criteria that was asked however it is quite plain and boring to look at, the use of white space is good as it draws attention to the main picture but the strap lines are very few and no other images are used, i hope to make my main project better than this.

magazine ideas for my magazine.

After looking through some magazine examples i have decided to do a magazine for girls aimed at 13-20.

magazine analysis.

This magazine is called clash, the word clash could be seen as a 'clash' of music or as the sound when something hits a drum, therefore by calling the magazine something such as clash it automatically makes you think of something to do with music. the title is white and looks as though it would stand out well on most back grounds. on this magazines situation it stands out well against the pink 'rocky' background. The font and the is simple color enables us to remember the logo well. The picture is a close up of Duffy and she is smiling. her skin looks quite flawless and her make up is quite plain and pretty. This magazine would be aimed at a target audience of girls interested in music from a age group of 13-20. The make up and shot of Duffy is easily recognized and her expression is happy and smiling. the magazine involves a lot of strap lines such as 'MGMT Brooklyns sonic adventures'. there are many strap lines like this in differant fonts. this enables the reader to see what is involved inside the magazine. There is also a square 'clash playlist' which shows the reader music that the magazine recommends. it takes up quite a big space on the cover and the

This magazine is called top of the pops. It is aimed at younger girls due to the bright colours and bright fonts. The mode of address is aimed at the younger generation as they would be more susceptible to want to be a ‘star’. The top of the pops logo is always the same if in different colours. It is bright and it catches the readers attention immediately and the readers are able to identify with it. The title top of the pops detonates to being on the top of the pops which connotes to literally being on top of the pops and having all the inside knowledge to the music industry at this time. In this issue ‘high school musical’ is featured on the front of the magazine. This would have been because high school musical had just released their newest movie at this time. The characters from high school musical are the biggest image on the magazine however there is many other images on the front cover too. The Anchorage text is 'you're a star' and if offers a high school musical make over. most young girls who are interested in the magazine would be interested in high school musical therefore would like to buy the magazine to be in with a chance of winning that. All over the front of the magazine there are pictures of what is featured inside. This emphasises the importance of all the features in the magazine.
Some of the sell lines used in the issue are things such as ‘ celebrity love secrets exposed’ this intrigues the younger generation as they would immediaty be interested into the secrets of celebritys.

ANALYSIS

This magazine cover is the one I want mine to most represent.
This magazine uses mostly reds and whites as the background the fonts stick to the colour scheme and it also includes one bold colour as in most NME covers, in this case the bold coloured font is yellow. The picture of lily on the front cover is what is used on the inside of the magazine on the double page spread. the strap lines all look quite bold and the main one is taken from the double page spread featured inside the magazine. The main imgaine takes up most of the page and some of the title, I want my magazine to resemble this design and include a big picture with a red costume. The front cover also includes round 'stamps' with information on it. i want to use this in my magazine because i think this most represents what buyers of my magazine would like to read, although it has all the information on it that the readers would like to know about the band, it also isnt to harsh on the eyes to look at, due to the space on the page and the size of the picture.
